Grandmaster Javokhir Sindarov was crowned champion of the 2026 Clutch Chess: Champions Showdown at the Saint Louis Chess Club in St. Louis, Missouri.
GM Praggnanandhaa Rameshbabu finished second, earning $109,000, while Saint Louis stalwart GM Fabiano Caruana took third with $81,000. GM Hikaru Nakamura rounded out the field, earning $67,000.
Held Oct. 27–29, the high-stakes rapid event featured four of the world’s top grandmasters competing in an 18-game double round-robin format for a share of the tournament’s prize fund.
Created by GM Maurice Ashley, Clutch Chess is a unique tournament format in which the stakes rise with each round, bringing increasingly valuable points and cash prizes into play. Unlike traditional formats, where an early lead can provide a comfortable cushion, Clutch Chess keeps the pressure on until the very end. With wins worth more as the event progresses, players can mount dramatic comebacks, making every game an opportunity to shift the standings and reshape the race for the title.
“I want to thank the organizers for inviting me to be part of this wonderful event. I really enjoyed it — it was a great tournament. I’d also like to thank the commentators for their work throughout the event. This was my last tournament before the World Championship match, and I’m happy to have had such a great experience. I love Saint Louis, especially because of the people here,” said Sindarov.

“It’s been exciting to see the second annual Clutch Chess: Champions Showdown bring four of the world’s best players to Saint Louis for another compelling competition,” said GM Maurice Ashley, Creative Director of the Saint Louis Chess Club and creator of the Clutch Chess format. “The format continues to deliver a unique level of drama and intensity, and seeing Javokhir Sindarov crowned this year’s champion makes this event an exciting final stop before he competes for the FIDE World Championship. It’s been rewarding to help shape the format and watch it continue to engage players and fans around the world.”
Throughout October, the STLCC hosted a lineup of extraordinary events, including:
- The 2026 U.S. and U.S. Women’s Chess Championships: GM Wesley So claimed his fourth U.S. Chess Championship title after a dramatic playoff against GM Fabiano Caruana, while 16-year-old WIM Rachael Li captured her first U.S. Women’s Championship in a breakthrough performance.
- The Saint Louis Chess Conference: The second annual conference brought together more than 250 educators, researchers and chess enthusiasts from around the world, headlined by legendary World Champion Garry Kasparov. Over three days, attendees explored the future of women’s chess, the connection between mind and body in elite competition, and the powerful stories behind the game through marquee panels, discussions and a documentary screening. The event celebrated chess’s growing influence while recognizing additional legends through the World Chess Hall of Fame.
- Chess Hall of Fame Inductions: The U.S. Chess Hall of Fame welcomed Montgomery Major and International Master (IM) Jeremy Silman while the World Chess Hall of Fame honored GM Boris Gelfand during the opening ceremonies of the national championships. Four additional World Chess Hall of Fame inductees — GM Ulf Andersson, IM Nana Ioseliani, GM Vasyl Ivanchuk and GM Alexandra Kosteniuk — were honored during the closing ceremony of the Saint Louis Chess Conference.
“This month has showcased why Saint Louis continues to be a powerhouse in chess on the national and global stage,” said Rex Sinquefield, co-founder of the Saint Louis Chess Club. “From national championships and historic matchups between legends to the world’s top players competing in Clutch Chess, Saint Louis continues to bring together the very best in the game while inspiring the next generation of players. We’re proud to build on the city’s legacy as America’s Chess Capital and its enduring impact on chess worldwide.”
Fans can relive every game and highlight from all of this month’s events on the STLCC’s YouTube and Twitch.tv channels, featuring expert commentary from GMs Maurice Ashley and Yasser Seirawan, along with sports broadcaster James “Dash” Patterson.
