Presented by Chief Technology Officer Dr. John R. Sanford, the peer-reviewed paper details how ReflecTek™ addresses critical challenges limiting the proliferation of broadband satellite communications by reducing the cost, power consumption, and complexity of electronically steerable user terminals. Lower terminal costs can make broadband satellite service economically viable for the majority of potential customers who can’t be served with today’s terminals, and enable terminals with new and exciting form factors, significantly expanding the addressable market for satellite communications.

ReflecTek™ is a scalable reflect-array architecture that is fabricated by embedding liquid crystal in boards made using standard printed circuit board processes. This novel design makes broadband satellite terminals easier to manufacture, significantly less expensive, and less power-hungry. Further, the ReflecTek™ architecture is extensible to V-band and E-band, unlocking new possibilities for urban connectivity. These innovations open up both the broadband direct-to-device market and the satellite broadband market in underserved countries, together worth well over $100B per year. By addressing cost and power at the architecture level, ReflecTek™ is designed to go where MMIC technology simply can’t follow, opening a path to widespread adoption of satellite service globally.

“The linchpin technology for satellite communication is not in space, but on the ground,” said Dr. John D. Evans, Chief Executive Officer of Carillon Technologies. “The industry is investing tens of billions in satellites and network capacity, but terminal cost and power will ultimately determine how many users those networks can reach, and which companies will capture the return from all this investment. Truly global satellite connectivity and broadband direct-to-device service require terminals that are dramatically more affordable, consume less power and are easier to manufacture and deploy at scale. The ReflecTek™ architecture is designed from the ground up for exactly this purpose.”

“The key to ReflecTek™ is its architecture,” added Dr. Sanford. “The ReflecTek™ approach requires zero pick-and-place components at the element level ─ no MMICs, no varactors, and no passive components ─ just circuit board and liquid crystal. Further, we have neither lossy distribution networks nor power-hungry element-level amplifiers. Thus, ReflecTek™ is fast and cheap to manufacture, and the antenna itself consumes almost no power in operation. By moving away from element-level electronics, we can make hardware that average people can afford and use every day, while maintaining the performance required for broadband satellite communications.”

The IEEE International Phased Array Symposium is one of the world’s premier gatherings for the phased array systems and technology community. Carillon’s Director of Engineering, Dr. Milad Alemohammad, will also present a paper introducing one of Carillon’s two optical phased array technologies, Darpana™. First demonstrated in March 2023, Darpana™ is the world’s first scalable two-dimensional optical phased array technology. It is designed to steer high-capacity optical data electronically rather than mechanically across airborne, terrestrial, and satellite applications. Carillon’s other optical phased array technology, OTenna™, was publicly unveiled by Dr. Sanford at the 2026 SPIE Photonics West. Together, Darpana™, OTenna™, and ReflecTek™ position Carillon as one of the world’s leaders in advanced phased array and communications technologies.
