O’Connor discusses how Travis County considered a 2.8% property tax rate increase.

AUSTIN, TX, UNITED STATES, September 21, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ —

Travis County Commissioners are considering a proposed property tax rate of $0.386210 per $100 of taxable value for 2026, up from $0.375845 in 2025, representing an increase of approximately 2.8%.

The proposed increase comes as Travis County projects a total property tax levy of approximately $1.248 billion for 2026, up $21.6 million, or 1.8%, from the previous year.

According to Travis County, the proposed rate would result in property taxes of approximately $1,942.59 on an average residence homestead, compared with $1,936.40 under the 2025 rate, an increase of $6.19.

The relatively small increase for the average homestead reflects changes in taxable property values. Travis County reports that the average homestead taxable value decreased from $515,213 in 2025 to $502,989 in 2026. As a result, the change in the county tax bill for the average homestead is smaller than the percentage increase in the tax rate.

Property tax bills are based on a property’s taxable value and the applicable tax rates. Changes in a property’s taxable value can therefore offset or increase the effect of a change in the tax rate. Homeowners who qualify for exemptions may also have a lower taxable value than their property’s appraised value.

“Travis County homeowners should pay close attention to how this tax rate change affects their property tax bills. Reviewing property values and available exemptions can help homeowners make sure they are not paying more than necessary,” said Patrick O’Connor, president of O’Connor.

The proposed rate is higher than the county’s no-new-revenue tax rate of $0.378179 but does not exceed the voter-approval tax rate of $0.386210. As a result, Travis County is not required to hold an election on the proposed rate.

The proposed tax rate applies to the Travis County portion of a property owner’s tax bill. Other local taxing entities, including cities, school districts and special districts, set their own property tax rates.

The $6.19 estimate applies to the county’s tax on the average residence homestead. Individual homeowners may see a different change depending on their property’s taxable value and applicable exemptions.
